Gratings and Patterns

Norsam is skilled in the art of milling gratings as small as 20 nanometers to as large as several hundred microns. Norsam utilizes focused ion beam, laser and chemical etch techniques to create gratings and patterns. Materials range from optical fibers, diamond, silicon and sapphire to metals, glass and organic polymers. High aspect ratios can be achieved.

Below are images of our gratings on optical single mode fibers. The round dark area is the core of the fiber. The cladding is the lighter area. We center the pattern in the middle of the core and mill into the cleaved fiber with the FIB. These are NIST traceable calibration standards for determining dirt size in inspection scopes.

The following two examples are directly milled with a FIB. The first image is directly milled in silicon, and has a period of 42 nanometers. The second image is gold on a silicon substrate with a 20 nanometer line width.
